Plex Guide Hermes

Welcome to your Plex guide

This page is for new users who have been invited to a Plex server. It gives you the basics: what Plex is, how to get the app, how to sign in, and what to try first.

1. What Plex is

Plex is an app that lets you stream movies, series, music, and other media from a server you’ve been granted access to. You sign in with your Plex account, then you’ll see the shared library once access has been accepted.

2. What you need first

  • A Plex account
  • An invite accepted on that account
  • The Plex app on your TV, phone, tablet, computer, or streaming device
  • A stable internet connection

3. Typical setup steps

  1. Create or sign in to your Plex account.
  2. Accept the server invite if one was sent to your email.
  3. Install the Plex app on the device you want to watch on, or use the web app.
  4. Sign in with the same Plex account that received the invite.
  5. Open the left menu and look for the shared server/library.
  6. Choose a movie or series and press play.

Phones & tablets

Install Plex from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, sign in, then open the shared library.

  • iPhone / iPad: install Plex, sign in, then check the left menu for shared libraries.
  • Android phones/tablets: install Plex from Google Play and use the same invited account.
  • If mobile playback asks for activation, try the browser or TV app first.

Smart TV & streaming boxes

Search for Plex in your device app store, then sign in with your invited Plex account.

  • Apple TV
  • Android TV / Google TV
  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Roku
  • Samsung / LG Smart TV

Computers

You can either use the browser version or the desktop app.

  • Open app.plex.tv in your browser
  • Or install Plex for Windows / macOS
  • Use the same Plex account that accepted the invite

4. If you can’t see the server

  • Make sure you’re signed into the correct Plex account
  • Check whether you accepted the invite email
  • Sign out and back in again
  • Try the Plex web app in a browser
  • Give the invite a little time to sync

5. If something won’t play

  • Check your internet speed
  • Try lowering playback quality in the Plex player settings
  • Restart the Plex app and device
  • Try another device to compare
  • Disable or change subtitles if buffering starts only with subtitles on
  • If the problem continues, contact the person who invited you

6. Payment reference

If you need your payment reference, use the Payment Lookup page and enter the email address linked to your Plex account.
